StartingPoint Hub does not give legal advice. The organizations below can help with your case. Many are free or low-cost.
Who can help with an immigration case
- A licensed attorney. Ask for their state bar license number, and check it on the state bar’s website.
- A DOJ-accredited representative working at a nonprofit organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Notaries, “immigration consultants” and travel agents are not allowed to give immigration legal advice.
Where to look

- Your state bar’s lawyer referral service: search your state’s name plus “lawyer referral service.”
Before your first meeting
- Bring your passport, any immigration papers and letters you have received, and a list of your questions.
- Ask how much it will cost before they start work, and get it in writing.
- Ask for an interpreter if you need one.
